DJs are the people who play and present music on the radio, or in a nightclub. A VJ is a person who introduces music videos on television. VJs were first seen on television in the early 1980s when MTV went on the air. As MTV caught on, more and more audience(观众)went for music videos, many other kinds of music video channels 频道) ( started sending out programs. Besides rock music, there were channels later for other kinds of music, such as country music, light rock, and R&B, and all of these channels needed VJs. By the 1990s, international music video channels like Channel V in Asia and VIVA in Europe had started. The VJs for the new international stations had to be chosen carefully. Although some VJs did shows for small audiences and showed mostly local things, other VJs presented shows for international viewers. These VJs, and the things they presented, needed to be popular in several different cultures. One successful international VJ in Asia is Asha Gill. She is from Malaysia, but her parents and grandparents are from India, France, and England. She speaks three languages and has fans across Asia, from Japan to the United Arab Emirates. Another VJ who has made a big hit in Asia is Lili. She is actually a computer-animated VJ on MTV Asia. Her shows can be seen in five languages. When asked what makes a good video jockey, many successful VJs have given similar answers. To be a good VJ you need to know about music, you need to be funny, and you can’t be shy. 50. When were VJs first seen on television? A. In the early 1980s. C. By the 1990s. B. In the late 1980s. D. In the early 1990s.

51. What kind of music did the first VJ probably introduce?

A. Classical music.

B. R&B.

C. Country music.

D. Rock music.

52. Which of the following is unnecessary for being a VJ according to the last Paragraph? A. Knowing about music very well. B. Being able to make people laugh. C. Speaking many different languages. D. Talking easily with different people. C There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave(挥手)to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved. I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not relish the long train journey and had brought along many magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sat down and started to read magazines. It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive, I decided to wave back. From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time. The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. When my uncle arrived, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug(拥抱). I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car. I looked forward to the return journey. 53. The writer expected the train trip to be ______. A. dangerous A. Choose. B. pleasant B. Enjoy. C. exciting C. Prepare for. D. boring D. Carry on. 54. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “relish” in Paragraph 2? 55. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Pleasure of living in the country. B. Reading gives people happiness. C. Comfort in traveling by train. D. Smiles brighten people up.

D Easter is still a great day for worship(敬拜), candy in baskets and running around the yard finding eggs, but every year it gets quite a bit worse for rabbits. And no, not because the kids like to pull their ears. The point is because of weather change, and some researchers found that rising temperatures are having harmful effects on at least five kinds of rabbits in the US. Take the Lower Keys Marsh rabbit as an example. It lives on the islands, but it is seriously affected(影响)now by rising sea levels. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, an ocean level rise of 0.9-meter would destroy their living place completely. The snowshoe hare, on the other hand, has a color problem. Most of these rabbits change their fur color from white in the wintertime to brown in the summer, which gives them better cover from predators (捕食者) . As the number of days with snow becoming less, more and more rabbits are being left in white fur during the days of both fall and spring, making them an easier mark for predators. American pikas or rock rabbits might be the first of these species to go die out because of the weather change. Pikas live high in the cool, damp mountains. As global temperatures rise, they would naturally move to higher ground – but they already live on the mountaintops. They can’t go any higher. The National Wildlife Federation reports that they might not be able to stand the new temperatures as their living place heats up. The volcano rabbit has the same problem. Recent studies have shown that their lower living place has already moved upward about 700 meters, but there are not right plants for them to move higher, so they have to stay in the middle. Native to the US, pygmy rabbits weigh less than 1 pound and live in the American West. They are believed to be the smallest rabbits in the world. Their living places have been destroyed by development. They also live on winter cover, but lesser snowfall is leaving them unprotected. All of these give new meaning to dressing up in a huge rabbit costume(服装)this Easter. 56. Why does the writer mention Easter at the beginning of the passage? A. To raise the problem about rabbits. B. To remind people of Easter traditions. C. To show the importance of Easter Day. D. To discuss the relationship between Easter and rabbits. 57. Why can some rabbits be easily discovered by predators now? A. Because they have moved to the places with fewer plants. B. Because they can hardly live on color cover as before. C. Because they can’t change their color into white. D. Because they are left to more skillful hunters. 58. What is the problem faced by rock rabbits and volcano rabbits? A. They are both affected by less snow. B. Neither of them can find enough food. C. Neither of them can move to higher place. D. They are both affected by rising sea levels.

59. What can you infer from the passage? A. Predators are more skillful than before. B. The weather is getting much hotter now. C. There will be no rabbit costume for Easter soon. D. People should care more about the rabbit problem. 七、阅读还原句子(共 8 分,每小题 2 分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后方框中所给的五个句子中选出四个, 分别填入文中相应的序号 后,使短文语义连贯,结构完整。 People often call the plastic bags “white pollution”. 60. __________, it becomes the worst invention for the human. Even though they now seem closer, they may still be different from your home country. So it is important to change your behavior so that you don’t insult or offend (冒犯)the local people. Following are some basic rules that will make communication easier, and your trip more enjoyable. First, never raise your voice in order to make yourself understood. If you don’t know the word for something in the local language, try to draw a picture or point to an object. Before you

travel, you can also learn some basic words or phrases of the local language, such as words for please, thank you, and may I, as well as basic greetings. Second, consider the main religion of the country you plan to visit and read about any taboos (禁忌)related to clothing. You can bring some clothes such as shirts or T-shirts that cover your shoulders, and long trousers. Avoid topics that you think may be sensitive(敏感的). If a topic is sensitive in your own culture, it will likely be the same in other cultures. Feel free to show interest in the history and customs(风俗)of the place that you are visiting, but don’t ask too many questions about why things are done a certain way; you may offend the local people. Keep in mind that in many cultures, showing affection(情感)in public is considered taboo. Kissing on the street or in public is unacceptable behavior and should be avoided. If you are unsure of how to behave, watch the local people and copy them. Finally, if you wish to take a gift, do some research. The idea of the perfect gift is different greatly from country to country, and one of the easiest ways to offend someone is to give the wrong gift. 64. What makes it easier to reach the faraway places? 65. What are the basic local words you should learn before travelling? 66. If you don’t know how to behave in a new place, what can you do? 67. What are the safe topics in a place you are visiting? 68. What does the writer mainly tell us in the passage?

We’ve got lots of great new books to tell you about. My life, by Jack Wrigley, will keep all fans of Jack’s stories happy for hours. I must say, though, that some of it is difficult to understand if you haven’t read his other books. Now, for those who like a good cry, Goodbye to the Fields, by Susan Marks, tells the sad story of John, a small boy who has to leave the countryside he loves when the family moves to London because of his father’s job. There are plenty of books with helpful advice this week. First, The A-Z of photography would make a great present for anyone just starting out with a camera. It has everything you need to know to take really good photos, and learn about cameras, film, lighting and so on. Turning to the kitchen, Cooking for one, by Adrian White, says on its cover that even people who hate cooking will find it useful. The last book this week is Holidays in Europe, by Mary Curtis. The writer doesn’t talk about the famous places everyone visits, but describes lots of small places away from the main tourist areas. That’s it for this week. See you next time. 三、听独白,记录关键信息,独白听两遍。

We usually hold the match on the beach but this time it’ll be in West Park. If you’re a footballer, go there at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. Afterwards, we thought we’d all get together – both colleges. We’ve decided to have a beach dinner. We’ll meet back at the college and set off together at about five o’clock. On Sunday we’ll have a picnic in Thornton Forest. Everybody should meet at the college at 12:15 pm. We’ll walk to the station and take the quarter to one train to Thornton. The teachers will bring all the food. The forest is very beautiful with a small lake. So do bring your cameras. That’s all. Now, are there any questions?
